Terms, definitions and measurements to describe sonographic features of lymph nodes : consensus opinion from the Vulvar International Tumor Analysis (VITA) group

In centers with access to high-end ultrasound machines and expert sonologists, ultrasound is used to detect metastases in regional lymph nodes from melanoma, breast cancer and vulvar cancer. There is, as yet, no international consensus on ultrasound assessment of lymph nodes in any disease or medical condition. The lack of standardized ultrasound nomenclature to describe lymph nodes makes it diffi

Ontogeny of vesicular monoamine transporter mRNAs VMAT1 and VMAT2. I. The developing rat central nervous system

We used in situ hybridization histochemistry to study the expression of the mRNA of the two vesicular monoamine transporters (VMAT1 and VMAT2) during embryonic and postnatal development of the central nervous system (CNS) int he rat. In the adult rat, VMAT2 mRNA is present exclusively in monoaminergic cell groups of the CNS and VMAT1 mRNA was reported to be present in the adrenal medulla and certa

Recognition and Treatment of Problem Substance Use: A Factorial Survey of Social Workers', Nurses' and Doctors' Judgements

The “governing images” associated with the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs have varied across time and space. In Sweden, the 20th century saw a number of such perspectives – including the moral, the medical and the social – alternately dominating or coexisting. This multitude in perspectives is reflected in the organisation of addiction care and treatment, in which the responsibility for defin

Probing the quality control mechanism of the Escherichia coli twin-arginine translocase with folding variants of a de novo–designed heme protein

Protein transport across the cytoplasmic membrane of bacterial cells is mediated by either the general secretion (Sec) system or the twin-arginine translocase (Tat). The Tat machinery exports folded and cofactor-containing proteins from the cytoplasm to the periplasm by using the transmembrane proton motive force as a source of energy. The Tat apparatus apparently senses the folded state of its pr

In good times and in bad Immigrants, Self-employment and Social insurances.

This thesis analyses self-employment, sickness absence and early retirement pension among immigrants in Sweden. The empirical analysis investigate a period, 1981-2003, characterized by a transformation from high employment and expansion of the welfare state in the 1980s into a state with high unemployment and tightening social insurance systems during in the 1990s, This thesis goes beyond most pre

Characterization of mutations in complement factor I (CFI) associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome

Recent studies have identified mutations in the complement regulatory gene factor I (CFI) that predispose to atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). CFI is a two-chain serine protease in which the light chain carries the catalytic domain while the heavy chain's function is unclear. It downregulates the alternative and classical complement pathways by cleaving the alpha' chains of C3b and C4b in

Recent discoveries widen the basis for future research in Alzheimer´s disease.

Abstract. Intended as food for thought this revue offers a general orientation on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with comments on the brain changes and clinical features. But more importantly, it points out recent research findings which may offer new alleys for AD research pertinent to the etiology and pathogenesis of AD and alternatives to the so far rather unfruitful and costly amyloid research trail

Transcription Factor Binding Site Analysis Identifies FOXO Transcription Factors as Regulators of the Cutaneous Wound Healing Process.

The search for significantly overrepresented and co-occurring transcription factor binding sites in the promoter regions of the most differentially expressed genes in microarray data sets could be a powerful approach for finding key regulators of complex biological processes. To test this concept, two previously published independent data sets on wounded human epidermis were re-analyzed. The prese

Simulated carbon emissions from land-use change are substantially enhanced by accounting for agricultural management

It is over three decades since a large terrestrial carbon sink (S-T) was first reported. The magnitude of the net sink is now relatively well known, and its importance for dampening atmospheric CO2 accumulation, and hence climate change, widely recognised. But the contributions of underlying processes are not well defined, particularly the role of emissions from land-use change (E-LUC) versus the

Determination of Novel Borrelia Genospecies in Swedish Ixodes ricinus Ticks.

A total of 301 adult questing Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected at 15 different locations along the south and east coasts of Sweden to determine the Borrelia genospecies diversity. Thirty-two ticks (11%) were found to be positive by nested PCR with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato-specific primers. Species determination was based on partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and the flagellin gene.

Activity of LKB1 and AMPK-related kinases in skeletal muscle: effects of contraction, phenformin, and AICAR

Activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) by exercise and metformin is beneficial for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. We recently found that, in cultured cells, the LKB1 tumor suppressor protein kinase activates AMPK in response to the metformin analog phenformin and the AMP mimetic drug 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-beta-D-ribofuranoside (AICAR). We have also reported that LKB1 activ
