Feeding Strategies Based on Probing Control for E. coli and V. cholerae Cultivations

TillsatsThe recombinant DNA techniques have made it possible to produce many different proteins for a wide range of applications. The vector encoding for the recombinant protein is often inserted in the bacterium E. coli as it is a well studied and a well-known organism. To achieve a high productivity, it is important to reach a high cell density. This is obtained through fed-batch operation where the nut

Integrating needs assessment within next generation e-learning systems: lessons learnt from a case study

In this paper we outline a method for systematically addressing needs assessment (QUALISEM-PEOPLE), alongside a case study of its use within a medium sized, German company. The method was designed in order to provide guidance in analysing skill and role competences, particularly when e-learning systems are being considered for training purposes. The method proved to be successful within the compan

The distribution of chydorids (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) in European shallow lakes and its application to ecological quality monitoring

This study describes the chydorid (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) assemblages from 66 European shallow lakes, and presents data relating the assemblages to lake type and ecological quality. Forty species, out of a total recorded European fauna of 60 species, were found in the study sites. No significant differences were found between chydorid assemblages associated with rock and plant substrata. Pattern

Holistic spatial semantics and post-Talmian motion event typology : A case study of Thai and Telugu

Leonard Talmy’s influential binary motion event typology has encountered four main challenges: (a) additional language types; (b) extensive “type-internal” variation; (c) the role of other relevant form classes than verbs and “satellites;” and (d) alternative definitions of key semantic concepts like Motion, Path and Manner. After reviewing these issues, we show that the theory of Holistic Spatial

Antioxidants as potential anti-inflammatory components in processed meat products

In 2015, the World health organisation (WHO) released a press statement together with the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) classifying processed meat as carcinogenic. Since then, research in this area has been focused on finding the underlying mechanism(s) responsible for the link between processed meat and the increased prevalence of colorectal cancer. One of the main hypotheses

Incidence of Nocturia in Men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Associated with Benign Prostatic Enlargement and Outcomes After Medical Treatment : Results from the Evolution European Association of Urology Research Foundation Prospective Multinational Registry

Background Nocturia is one of the most prevalent and bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men, leading to increased morbidity and mortality and a considerable economic burden on healthcare systems. Understanding its natural history, effect of pharmacotherapy, and predictors of failure of pharmacotherapy would allow optimised patient management. Objective To evaluate the prevalence an

RTNduals an R/Bioconductor package for analysis of co-regulation and inference of dual regulons

MOTIVATION: Transcription factors (TFs) are key regulators of gene expression, and can activate or repress multiple target genes, forming regulatory units, or regulons. Understanding downstream effects of these regulators includes evaluating how TFs cooperate or compete within regulatory networks. Here we present RTNduals, an R/Bioconductor package that implements a general method for analyzing pa

Nomenclature of Genetically Determined Myoclonus Syndromes : Recommendations of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Task Force

Genetically determined myoclonus disorders are a result of a large number of genes. They have wide clinical variation and no systematic nomenclature. With next-generation sequencing, genetic diagnostics require stringent criteria to associate genes and phenotype. To improve (future) classification and recognition of genetically determined movement disorders, the Movement Disorder Society Task Forc

Regulation of fungal decomposition at single-cell level

Filamentous fungi play a key role as decomposers in Earth’s nutrient cycles. In soils, substrates are heterogeneously distributed in microenvironments. Hence, individual hyphae of a mycelium may experience very different environmental conditions simultaneously. In the current work, we investigated how fungi cope with local environmental variations at single-cell level. We developed a method based

Quality of life of Hurler syndrome patients after successful hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Hurler syndrome (HS) is a lysosomal storage disease characterized by multisystem morbidity and death in early childhood. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) results in long-term survival, although with significant residual disease burden. How this residual disease affects the health-related quality of life is unknown. Therefore, we conducted a multicenter cohort study on functional and

Using the shared genetics of dystonia and ataxia to unravel their pathogenesis

In this review we explore the similarities between spinocerebellar ataxias and dystonias, and suggest potentially shared molecular pathways using a gene co-expression network approach. The spinocerebellar ataxias are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by coordination problems caused mainly by atrophy of the cerebellum. The dystonias are another group of neurological movement diso

Recommendations for patient screening in ultra-rare inherited metabolic diseases : What have we learned from Niemann-Pick disease type C?

Background: Rare and ultra-rare diseases (URDs) are often chronic and life-threatening conditions that have a profound impact on sufferers and their families, but many are notoriously difficult to detect. Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C) serves to illustrate the challenges, benefits and pitfalls associated with screening for ultra-rare inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs). A comprehensive, non-sys

Progressive myoclonus ataxia : Time for a new definition?

Background: The clinical demarcation of the syndrome progressive myoclonus ataxia is unclear, leading to a lack of recognition and difficult differentiation from other neurological syndromes. Objectives: The objective of this study was to apply a refined definition of progressive myoclonus ataxia and describe the clinical characteristics in patients with progressive myoclonus ataxia and with isola

Circulating Interleukin-6 Levels and Incident Ischemic Stroke : A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prospective Studies

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Human genetic studies support a key role of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. Still, there are only limited data from observational studies exploring circulating IL-6 levels as a risk factor for ischemic stroke. Here, we set out to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of aggregate data on cohort studies to determine the magnitude and s

Platelets in ITP : Victims in charge of their own fate?

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune bleeding disorder. The pathophysiological mechanisms leading to low platelet levels in ITP have not been resolved, but at least involve autoantibody-dependent and/or cytotoxic T cell mediated platelet clearance and impaired megakary-opoiesis. In addition, T cell imbalances involving T regulatory cells (Tregs) also appear to play an important role. Int

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 by rapid antigen tests on saliva in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presents great challenges on transmission prevention, and rapid diagnosis is essential to reduce the disease spread. Various diagnostic methods are available to identify an ongoing infection by nasopharyngeal (NPH) swab sampling. However, the procedure requires handling by health care professionals, and therefore limits the application in household and community s
