Structural and Functional Studies of Gas6

The vitamin K-dependent and ubiquitously expressed 82 kDa glycoprotein product of the growth-arrest-specific-gene 6, Gas6, shows 44% sequence identity to the anticoagulant protein, protein S. Both proteins share further the same domain organization. A short loop region, 4 epidermal growth factor-like modules and an SHBG-like region follow the N-terminal Gla-domain, which confers membrane-binding c

Quantitative study of 10 Hz operation of a soft x-ray laser-energy stability and target considerations

A soft x- ray laser from Ni- like Mo, pumped in grazing incidence ( GRIP), is analyzed with regard to high repetition rate operation. Reliable lasing is obtained, but with significant energy fluctuations attributed mainly to beam pointing jitter from the pump laser. Two modes of operation are compared: continuously moving target and stationary target. With a moving target the soft X- ray output is

A classification of hemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and related disorders

The diagnostic terms hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) are based on historical and overlapping clinical descriptions. Advances in understanding some of the causes of the syndrome now permit many patients to be classified according to etiology. The increased precision of a diagnosis based on causation is important for considering logical approaches to tre

ERP Licensing Perspectives on Adoption of ERPs in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

The ERP market has been changing since the implementation peaks observed around Y2K, when most of the high-end adopters take their chance of substituting legacy systems while implementing integrated management. This adoption movement from bigger companies created a reaction on the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) ERP market: on the vendor side, it was necessary to find new market segments

Place Attachment and Climate-Related Hazards in Small Remote Communities in the Nordic Countries

Global climate change is characterized by increasing and differentiated exposure to climate-related hazards such as floods, landslides, avalanches, storms, and wildfires (IPCC 2018, 2022). There is a significant volume of research on the effects of such events, and over the last decade, much of this research has been directed at where most lives and values can be saved by protective measures (e.g.

Gamma-decay Lifetime Measurements in the Second Minimum of 58Cu

The individual lifetimes of three low-lying states in the proton-decaying well-deformed rotational band in the second minimum of the N = Z nucleus Cu-58 were determined. Doppler-shift attenuated gamma -ray lineshapes were analyzed following the fusion-evaporation reaction C-40,(Mg-24,1 alpha 1p1n)Cu-58 and using the EUROBALL gamma -ray spectrometer coupled to ancillary detector systems. The deduce

Darmin is a novel secreted protein expressed during endoderm development in Xenopus.

Endoderm development is an area of intense interest in developmental biology, but progress has been hampered by the lack of specific markers for differentiated endodermal cells. In an unbiased secretion cloning screen of Xenopus gastrula embryos we isolated a novel gene, designated Darmin. Darmin encodes a secreted protein of 56 kDa containing a peptidase M20 domain characteristic of the glutamate

A genetic polymorphism in connexin 37 as a prognostic marker for atherosclerotic plaque development

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease, in part characterized by chronic inflammatory changes in the vessel wall and loss of normal physical and biochemical interactions between endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. Previous studies [Hu J., Cotgreave IA. J Clin Invest; 99: 1-5] have provided molecular links between inflammation and myoendothelial communication

The Lifetime of the Proton-decaying 8915 keV State in 58Cu

Energy correlations between gamma -ray transitions and the prompt proton decay line in Cu-58 were studied by means of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-40(Mg-24,1 alpha 1p1n) using the EUROBALL spectrometer coupled to ancillary detector devices. A lifetime of 0.06 < tau < 0.58 ps for the 8915 keV proton-decaying state in Cu-58 is deduced. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of capture ELISA for detection of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies directed against proteinase 3 in Wegener's granulomatosis: first results from a multicentre study

Objective: To evaluate the performance characteristics of direct and capture ELISA for the detection of PR3-ANCA in Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) in international ANCA reference laboratories. Methods: Serum samples were derived from patients with histological and clinical diagnosis of WG (n = 60), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (n = 30) and healthy controls (n = 30). Each of them was tested for the pre

Temperature limited fed-batch cultivation with a probing feeding strategy for Escherichia coli

A cultivation strategy combining the advantages of temperature limitedfed-batch and probing control is presented. This is a suitable way to produce recombinant proteins while minimizing therelease of endotoxins which complicates the downstream processing. The downside with the temperature limited fed-batch technique has been the difficulty to achieve a controlled excess of glucose inthe reactor with

Preparation of the Gaia Data Processing: First Astrometric Results

The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) will produce high-precision astrometry for 10^9 objects up to 20th magnitude. The volume of data generated (about 150TB of compressed raw data) and the complexity of the relationships between them make the scientific processing a challenging task. This paper presents the basic concepts of the core of the astrometric data reduction, the AGIS syste

An L-infinity Approach to Structure and Motion Problems in 1D-Vision

The structure and motion problem of multiple one- dimensional projections of a two-dimensional environment is studied. One-dimensional cameras have proven useful in several different applications, most prominently for autonomous guided vehicles, but also in ordinary vision for analysing planar motion and the projection of lines. Previous results on one-dimensional vision are limited to classifying

Excited state dynamics of the carotenoid peridinin

Carotenoids play a number of roles in living organisms. In addition to their well-know light-harvesting function in photosynthesis, they have also photoprotective and antioxidative functions in various physiological systems. Studies of dynamics of carotenoid excited states have established the following scheme: after excitation of a carotenoid to its S2 state (1Bu+), a fast relaxation to the Si st

Nonlinear approximation of functions in two dimensions by sums of exponential functions

We consider the problem of approximating a given function in two dimensions by a sum of exponential functions, with complex-valued exponents and coefficients. In contrast to Fourier representations where the exponentials are fixed, we consider the nonlinear problem of choosing both the exponents and coefficients. In this way we obtain accurate approximations with only few terms. Our approach is bu

Nutritional properties and phenolic content of a bakery product substituted with a mango (Mangifera indica) 'Ataulfo' processing by-product

Wheat flour and cane sugar were partially substituted (50 and 75%) by a mango-processing by-product (MPB) as an added-value food ingredient in muffins. Their sensory analysis, chemical composition, antioxidant activity and in vitro starch hydrolysis properties were studied. Sensory analysis showed statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between control and muffins 75% MPB substituted level

Long-term follow-up of HCV-infected hematopoietic SCT patients and effects of antiviral therapy

This prospective study was initiated in 1993 with the aim to study late effects and responses to antiviral therapy in a cohort of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients. A total of 195 patients were included from 12 centers. In all, 134 patients had undergone allogeneic and 61 autologous hematopoietic SCT (HSCT). The median follow-up from HSCT is currently 16.8 years and the maximum 27.2 years.
