Integrating needs assessment within next generation e-learning systems: lessons learnt from a case study

In this paper we outline a method for systematically addressing needs assessment (QUALISEM-PEOPLE), alongside a case study of its use within a medium sized, German company. The method was designed in order to provide guidance in analysing skill and role competences, particularly when e-learning systems are being considered for training purposes. The method proved to be successful within the compan

The distribution of chydorids (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) in European shallow lakes and its application to ecological quality monitoring

This study describes the chydorid (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) assemblages from 66 European shallow lakes, and presents data relating the assemblages to lake type and ecological quality. Forty species, out of a total recorded European fauna of 60 species, were found in the study sites. No significant differences were found between chydorid assemblages associated with rock and plant substrata. Pattern

Protein Quality Control Pathways at the Crossroad of Synucleinopathies

The pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, multiple system atrophy, and many others converge at alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregation. Although it is still not entirely clear what precise biophysical processes act as triggers, cumulative evidence points towards a crucial role for protein quality control (PQC) systems in modulating α-Syn aggregation and toxicity. These enc

3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase deficiency : A case report of a treatable cause of seizures

Serine deficiency disorders are a new group of neurometabolic diseases resulting from a deficiency in one of the three enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway of L-serine. Deficiency of the enzyme 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3-PGDH), which catalyzes the first step in the biosynthetic pathway, leads to congenital microcephaly, severe psychomotor retardation, and intractable seizures. We report a

Contrasting stripes are a widespread feature of group living in birds, mammals and fishes

Grouping is a widespread form of predator defence, with individuals in groups often performing evasive collective movements in response to attack by predators. Individuals in these groups use behavioural rules to coordinate their movements, with visual cues about neighbours' positions and orientations often informing movement decisions. Although the exact visual cues individuals use to coordinate

Primary productivity of managed and pristine forests in Sweden

Land use is affecting 70% of global ecosystems and their functioning. Forest management is a regionally dominant land use and affects forest ecosystems by changing both structure and functioning, but its impact on primary productivity is not well known. Here we investigated the effect of forest management on primary productivity by comparing managed secondary forests with relatively pristine unman

Fast kicker systems for ALS-U

Fast kicker systems are required for the proposed upgrade of ALS to a diffraction-limited light source (ALS-U). The main approach is to have multiple stripline kicker magnets driven by inductive adders. The design details of the kicker structures and the inductive adder options will be discussed.

Evidence for scale- and disturbance-dependent trait assembly patterns in dry semi-natural grasslands

1. The mechanisms driving nonrandom assembly patterns in plant communities have long been of interest in ecological research. Competing ecological theories predict that coexisting species may either be more functionally dissimilar than expected by chance (with functional divergence' mainly reflecting niche differentiation) or be functionally more similar than expected (with functional convergence'

Influence of bioreactor scale and complex medium on probing control of glucose feeding in cultivations of recombinant strains of Escherichia coli

The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of a feedback glucose control strategy (the probing strategy) in production relevant bioreactors with complex and mineral media. Experimental results from fedbatch cultivations with two recombinant Escherichia coli constructs expressing two different human therapeutic proteins were used to assess the performance and limitations of the gluc

Defective chromosome segregation and telomere dysfunction in aggressive Wilms' tumors

Purpose: In many childhood neoplasms, prognostic subgroups have been defined based on specific chromosome changes. In Wilms' tumor (WT), such subclassification has been hampered by the diverse and relatively unspecific pattern of chromosomal imbalances present in these tumors. Unspecific patterns of cytogenetic imbalances in tumors are often caused by mitotic segregation errors due to short dysfun

Determination of dissociation constants between polyelectrolytes and proteins by affinity capillary electrophoresis

In this manuscript we report the binding affinity between two model proteins, human serum albumin (HSA) and ribonuclease A (RNase A), and negatively charged polyelectrolytes, two different heparin fractions and dextran sulfate, by means of partial filling and affinity capillary electrophoresis. The apparent dissociation constants, Kd, obtained by use of the partial-filling method, between HSA and

Description of Acinetobacter venetianus ex Di Cello et al. 1997 sp nov.

The name 'Acinetobacter venetianus' has been used previously to designate three marine hydrocarbon-degrading Acinetobacter strains, of which strain RAG-1 (=ATCC 31012) has industrial applications for the production of the bioemulsifier emulsan. However, to date, the name of this taxon has not been validly published. In this study, five strains were examined to corroborate the delineation of this t

Joint Nordic prospective study on human herpesvirus 8 and multiple myeloma risk

An association between human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) and multiple myeloma ( MM) has been reported, though most studies have not confirmed such association. To follow-up on a previous prospective seroepidemiological study, where HHV8 tended to associate with MM risk, we linked five large serum banks in the Nordic countries with the Nordic cancer registries and 329 prospectively occurring cases of MM w

Rat stomach ECL cells: mode of activation of histidine decarboxylase

Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) occurs in ECL cells in the oxyntic mucosa of rat stomach. It is activated by gastrin. Refeeding of fasted rats or treatment with the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole promptly raised the serum gastrin concentration and consequently the HDC activity and the HDC protein content of the oxyntic mucosa. The food- and omeprazole-induced increase in HDC mRNA expression in the

Socioeconomic inequalities in knee pain, knee osteoarthritis, and health-related quality of life : a population-based cohort study in southern Sweden

Objectives: To determine socioeconomic inequalities in frequent knee pain (FKP), knee osteoarthritis (OA), and associated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Sweden. Method: In 2007 a postal questionnaire about knee pain was sent to a random sample of 10 000 residents of Malmö, Sweden (7402 individuals responded). Subjects reporting pain with duration ≥ 4 weeks in one or both knees in the pa

Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy in elderly patients : is it safe?

Background: Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) appears to be safe and effective as open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) for benign or borderline malignant lesion. However, studies comparing LDP with ODP in elderly patients are limited. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of these two several approaches in elderly patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried o

Coupling between creep and redox behavior in nickel - yttria stabilized zirconia observed in-situ by monochromatic neutron imaging

Ni-YSZ (nickel - yttria stabilized zirconia) is a material widely used for electrodes and supports in solid oxide electrochemical cells. The mechanical and electrochemical performance of these layers, and thus the whole cell, depends on their microstructure. During the initial operation of a cell, NiO is reduced to Ni. When this process is conducted under external load, like also present in a stac
