Streptococcal beta protein has separate binding sites for human factor H and IgA-Fc.
The group B streptococcus (GBS) is the most important cause of life-threatening bacterial infections in newborn infants. Protective immunity to GBS infection is elicited by several surface proteins, one of which, the beta protein, is known to bind human IgA-Fc. Here, we show that the beta protein also binds human factor H (FH), a negative regulator of complement activation. Absorption experiments

Historically high food prices made us eat less fruit and vegetables
In 2022–2023, food prices in Sweden rose by 25 per cent. But it wasn't just households' wallets that were hit hard by the price increases – public health was too. Swedish consumers ate less dietary fibre, fruit and vegetables, according to a new report from Lund University. "A 25 per cent increase is historically unique. The last time food prices rose so much was in the 1950s, and interestingly, w

Fast fashion has a huge impact on the environment
On-trend clothes that you only wear a few times – in the beginning of the 2000s the fashion industry started speeding up production. Today, it accounts for around 10 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions and criticism is being directed at the industry for not taking responsibility for its social and environmental impact. The big question is; can fashion become sustainable? Technological deve

Your mobile phone can reveal whether you have been exposed to radiation
This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. In accidents or terror attacks which are suspected to involve radioactive substances, it can be difficult to determine whether people nearby have been exposed to radiation. Where do your online shopping returns end up? In the bin, new research finds
For e-commerce companies, it is cheaper to throw away returned items rather than selling them again. In a new study, researchers at Lund University in Sweden interviewed members of the textile and electronics industries in Europe, hoping to better understand a problem that is snowballing, yet has been the subject of little research. Internet shopping is increasingly commonplace, and with it comes

Cocktail of modified antibodies provides strong effect against SARS-CoV-2
Is it possible to improve the antibodies that the body produces to fight SARS-CoV2? In a study led by researchers from Lund University in Sweden, this was investigated by redesigning antibodies and combining them against the virus. The modified antibodies have been tested in human cells and with mice. Many antibodies used to treat covid infection during the pandemic have been so-called neutralizin

Lack of power grids sealed fate for early electric cars
New research from Lund University shows that insufficient infrastructure was key in American car manufacturers choosing gasoline cars over electric cars in the early 20th century. If electricity grids had spread just 15 or 20 years earlier, a majority of producers would have likely opted for electric cars, according to the study published in Nature Energy. A broad political commitment to a univers

Specially designed protein fights several species of bacteria
This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. As resistance to existing antibiotics increases, new approaches to serious bacterial infections are needed. Now researchers at Lund University in Sweden, together with colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) in the US, have investigated one such alternative. “We were able to show that a tai

New lithium mines could cut EU imports by half
The most important mineral in today's electric car batteries is lithium. China completely dominates the market, with no extraction taking place in Europe. However, a new study shows that there is great potential for European lithium production, which would bring improvements in competitiveness, the climate and security. The study also points out that there are complex international trade dependenc

Research offers no evidence to support tougher sentencing
Despite harsher sentences and increased resources for the criminal justice system, research shows nothing to indicate that this leads to reduced criminality. “We wanted to problematise the notion that punishment is the best option,” says Tova Bennet, researcher in Criminal Law at Lund University. Over the past 15 years, tougher sentencing has been a popular tool in Swedish law and order politics.

From Bluetooth to 5G – meet the researchers behind wireless communication
Long before the Bluetooth symbol started glowing blue ... ... and found its way into the pockets of people all over the world, there was a professor in Lund who refused to give up on a seemingly impossible idea: to replace the cable between mobile phones and headphones with a wireless link. And it was not just any link. It would work at a distance of ten metres, barely draw any power, take up hard
