Generating highly polarized nuclear spins in solution using dynamic nuclear polarization
A method to generate strongly polarized nuclear spins in solution has been developed, using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) at a temperature of 1.2 K, and at a field of 3.354 T, corresponding to an electron spin resonance frequency of 94 GHz. Trityl radicals are used to directly polarize C-13 and other low-gamma nuclei. Subsequent to the DNP process, the solid sample is dissolved rapidly with a
Superdeformed Bands in 80Sr and the Evolution of Deformation in Sr Isotopes
Four superdeformed bands are reported in Sr-80, extending known superdeformation in the Sr-38 series down to N = 42. The characteristics of these bands are discussed. Residual Doppler shifts were measured and average transition quadrupole moments (Q(t)) inferred for these new bands, These Q(t) values are compared to Q(t) values obtained for previously identified superdeformed bands in Sr81-83. The
Contractile and metabolic characteristics of creatine-depleted vascular smooth muscle of the rat portal vein
The functional consequences of phosphocreatine (PCr) depletion for mechanical properties, O2 consumption, and lactate production of the rat portal vein were investigated. After feeding rats for 8-9 weeks on a diet containing 2% beta-guanidino propionic acid (BGPA), PCr of the portal vein was reduced to 14% of control, whereas ATP was unchanged. No significant change was found in the level of spont
A qualitative study of the experiences during radiotherapy of Swedish patients suffering from lung cancer.
Purpose/Objectives: To describe experiences during radiotherapy of patients suffering from lung cancer. Design: Inductive, qualitative. Setting: A radiotherapy department in the south of Sweden. Sample: 15 patients with lung cancer undergoing their second week of radiotherapy. Methodologic Approach: Interviews were conducted in a hospital setting, transcribed, and content analyzed. Main Research V
Galectin-4 in normal tissues and cancer
Galectin-4 belongs to a subfamily of galectins composed of two carbohydrate recognition domains within the same peptide chain. The two domains have all the conserved galectin signature amino acids, but their overall sequences are only approximately 40% identical. Both domains bind lactose with a similar affinity as other galectins, but their respective preferences for other disaccharides, and larg
Redox hydrogel-based bienzyme microelectrodes for amperometric monitoring of L-glutamate
Fabrication and characterization of amperometric bienzyme L-glutamate sensitive microelectrodes are the prerequisite for monitoring changes Of L-glutamate concentration at glutamate-secreting cell cultures. The design of the glutamate microelectrodes is based on incorporating L-glutamate oxidase and horseradish peroxidase into a redox-hydrogel containing PVI19-dmeOs as the redox mediator and immob

Adaptive Control -- A Way to Deal with Uncertainty
This paper approaches the uncertainty problem from the point of view of adaptive control. The uncertainty is reduced by continuous monitoring of the response of the system to the control actions and appropriate modifications of the control law. It is shown that this approach makes it possible to deal with uncertainties that cannot be handled by high gain robust feedback control.

Development of Protein Microarray Chip Technology: An Outlook towards Proteomics and Diagnostics
One attractive method for monitoring biomolecular interactions in a highly parallel fashion is the use of microarrays. Microarrays can be applied for screening proteins which makes it an attractive tool in clinical diagnostics, drug discovery studies and basic protein research; even though many methodological challenges and ones relating to the quality control of microarrays still need to be solve

Analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer in district heating pipelines using the finite element method
The finite element method is applied to solve coupled steady-state fluid flow and heat transfer problems in insulated pipes of district heating networks. The main advantage of the finite element method involved here is the standard discretization and solution technique for both coupling of temperature-dependent physical properties in the thermo-hydraulic flow and for description of the multilayere

Electronic and structural analysis of Sb-induced GaAs(100)(2x4) and (2x8) surfaces
Electronic and structural properties of Sb-induced GaAs(100)(2x4) and (2x8) surfaces are studied by means of core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation and scanning tunneling microscopy. Combining these results and showing good consistency among them, we demonstrate that the Sb/GaAs(100)(2x4) surface is well compatible with the delta structural model, wh
