Heat loss from a thermal manikin during wet tests with walking simulation

The walking tests with a thermal manikin TORE were carried out with THERMPROTECT WP2 clothing. The test conditions simulated the human tests of the same work package, including ambient conditions (10 and 25 °C), clothing (impermeable and permeable), wetting of cotton underwear (wet and dry) and setting the walking speed to approximately the same level. Additional tests in homogenous conditions (Ta

Comparison of moisture equilibrium of cement-based materials in presence of slag and silica fume in different wetting and drying cycles

Water vapor sorption isotherms are essential data in models to predict the service life of the cement based structures. The knowledge about sorption isotherms in the presence of supplementary cementitous materials (SCMs) is limited. This study investigates the influence of water to cement ratio (0.4, 0.5 and 0.6), and the presence of two SCMs (70% slag and 10% silica fume) on sorption isotherm in

Effects of Farming Practice on Pollinators and Pollination across Space and Time

Popular Abstract in Swedish Intensifieringen av jordbruket under de senaste sextio åren har resulterat i en dramatisk produktionsökning av framförallt spannmål. Denna typ av produktion, speciellt det mest intensiva s.k. industrijordbruket, har samtidigt också resulterat i en ohållbar degradering av ekosystemen och miljön, till exempel förlust av biologisk mångfald, utsläpp av växthusgaser, förgiftSeveral studies have found that organic farms support higher biodiversity, but results vary between studies such that some also show no or even negative effects. There can be many reasons why studies comparing organic and conventional farming show conflicting results. The efficacy of organic farming can depend on focal taxa, landscape context, study scale and the proportion of organically managed

Adaptive predictive control for software systems

Self-adaptive software systems are designed to support a number of alternative solutions for fulfilling their requirements. These define an adaptation space. During operation, a self-adaptive system monitors its performance and when it finds that its requirements are not fulfilled, searches its adaptation space to select a best adaptation. Two major problems need to be addressed during the selecti

Configuration Management Stories from the Distributed Software Development Trenches

Distributed projects are generally recognized as being more complex and adding a number of new challenges to project management. Configuration management (CM) can be considered the infrastructure of all types of project being they co-located or distributed and lack of CM or badly implemented CM will hurt any type of project. In this paper, we take a closer look at the role of CM in distributed pro

Marital life course events and smoking behaviour in Sweden 1980-2000

The protective effect of marriage on smoking has been extensively established in the literature. However, less is known about the dynamics of how smoking behaviour is connected to various marital life course events, and whether there are any gender discrepancies in this respect. In this article the connection between the marital life course and smoking is analysed from a stress-related perspective

Approximate clustering of fingerprint vectors with missing values

We study the problem of clustering fingerprints with at most p missing values (CMV (p) for short) naturally arising in oligonucleotide fingerprinting, which is an efficient method for characterizing DNA clone libraries. We show that already CMV(2) is NP-hard. We also show that a greedy algorithm yields a min(1 + ln n, 2+pln l) approximation for CMV(p), and can be implemented to run in O(nl2p) time.

State-copying and Recomputation in Parallel Constraint Programming with Global Constraints

In this paper we discuss parallelization and distribution of problems modeled in a constraint programming (CP) framework. We focus on parallelization of depth-first search methods, since search is the most time-consuming task in CP. The current hardware development is moving towards multi-core processors and the cost of building distributed systems is shrinking. Hence, parallelization and distribu
