Pause structure and turn-taking in dialogue
The project data has also been made available to undergraduate students for their term paper studies. During the spring term 2000, a study made by Kristina Lundholm was completed (Lundholm 2000). The investigation deals with the relationship between pause length and the function that pauses serve in dialogue. Findings include the observation that both silent and filled 'thought' pauses ('tankepauser') have comparable durations, as do 'thought' pauses and 'initial' pauses (pauses between turns where the 'new' speaker has been previously nominated). On the other hand, 'thought' pauses and pauses at TRP ('Transition Relevance Place') did not have comparable durations nor did 'initial' pauses and 'reaction' pauses (pauses between turns where the 'new' speaker has not previously been nominated).
