On Fiction and Emotion

Daniel Barratt (Centre for Cognitive Semiotics, Lund University)

In this talk, I will take the so-called “paradox of fiction” as a point of departure; that is, the paradox of why we respond emotionally to fictional (non-existent) characters and events, especially the characters and events presented by the medium of narrative film.

In an attempt to find a possible solution to the paradox, I will outline a model of the human emotion system which appeals to different levels and types of explanation within the field of cognitive science, from neurobiology and connectionism, to psychology and philosophy of mind.
