The Workings of Art: Meta-cognition Through Artifacts
Barend van Heusden (University of Groningen)
In this lecture I will present and elaborate a few theses on art, understood as a specific form of semiotic cognition. A theory of semiotic cognition that takes into account meta-semiosis seems to be well-suited to explain a number of phenomena that have kept busy art philosophers since a long time (to name but a few: the function(s) of art; art and beauty; diachronic development in art; art versus entertainment). I will argue that what neuro-aesthetics has been offering us so far is lacking in theoretical sophistication - and that semiotics might be of help.
